Ted Hyland
I’m part of the corporate, commercial and real estate division of Iler Campbell. The type of work that I’m involved includes advising non-profits and charities on matters related to governance and regulatory matters affecting them, preparing and reviewing contracts, commercial leasing and commercial real estate transactions, employment-related matters and condominium development.
I came to the practice of law somewhat later in life. Prior to going to law school at the University of Toronto, I completed graduate studies in philosophy and theology in Toronto, Chicago and Paris. For 16 years I was a Jesuit, and just prior to starting law school had worked for five and a half years as the director of the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice, a human rights and international development agency sponsored by the Jesuits and located in Toronto. I’m also a former chair of the Inter-Church Committee for Refugees, which, until its dissolution in 2001, was the Canadian Christian churches’ principal collective vehicle for addressing Canada’s domestic and international refugee and immigration policies.
Following the completion of law school, I articled at Gowling, Strathy & Henderson in Toronto. I joined Iler Campbell in July 1999 and became an associate lawyer in the firm following my call to the Bar in February 2000.
In addition to my background of working in the charity sector, I’ve maintained an active involvement as a volunteer with charities. My associations have included service as a director on the boards of South Riverdale Community Health Centre (Toronto), Woodgreen Community Centre (Toronto).
Currently I’m on the boards of directors of L’Arche Toronto, Catherine Donnelly Foundation, FCJ Refugee Centre, L’Arche Daybreak Foundation U.S. and L’Arche Daybreak Foundation. I’m also a member of the advisory boards of the Canadian Alternative Investment Co-operative (CAIC) and Our Lady’s Missionaries. I participate in the Regulations Working Group of the Ontario Co-operative Association, which meets periodically with Ontario government officials who oversight of co-operatives in Ontario to discuss legislative and administrative issues affecting co-operatives.
