Angie Joyce
As a law clerk at Iler Campbell, I’m involved in the management of large real estate and related financial transactions, communicating between client and lawyer, and all other involved parties. I see my role as a traffic controller -- keeping everyone and everything on track.
I haven’t always had this job though. I’ve worked with Brian for most of his career and over the years I’ve done just about everything here.
When I was in university all of my friends got summer jobs at the Coca Cola factory in East York. I applied too but was rejected on the grounds that they had no washroom facilities for women. It was 1977, and I didn’t have the resources to take them to court for such blatant discrimination so I applied for other jobs as a legal secretary where I had previous experience.
I started working with Brian when he was a junior at another firm and, when summer ended, decided to stay. A few months later, that firm had dissolved and Brian set up his own practice. I came along for the ride. If Brian wasn’t doing it I was doing it. It was just the two of us at first.
Initially, he did most work that landed on his plate. In those early years he gained a reputation fighting for the rights of underdogs, whether it be in the penal system, the union movement, or getting involved assisting clients in numerous start‑up initiatives, be they co‑ops, non‑profits, or small businesses … never a dull moment.
As Brian got busier and the firm started to grow my role changed. I trained up, took classes along the way and expanded my skill‑set to meet the needs of our clients. It’s been a wild ride – the firm has had its ups and downs. But over the years incredible clients have remained a constant. I’ve been blessed to have been part of many teams engaged in making a difference.
In my spare time I sit on the board of directors of Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre. Our numerous programs include those for seniors, youth, and disabled. I’ve learned so much from this participation. It’s enhanced my respect for our firm's many clients in their ongoing efforts to advance their mandate in a progressive and effective way. I’m also a member of the Ontario Chapter of Graphoanalysts (graphoanalysis is the study of handwriting – it’s a fascinating hobby).
