How-To’s of Co-Buying – free workshop Jan 26

December 21st, 2016 by Iler Campbell

As promised, and further to Lauren’s November blog post on the challenges of entering the real estate market, we are pleased to announce that Iler Campbell’s session on the “How-To’s of Co-Buying” will take place on Thursday, January 26th at the Centre for Social Innovation at 720 Bathurst from 5.30-8.00pm.

In addition to hearing about legal aspects of co-ownership, you’ll be able to hear from a real estate agent, a mortgage broker, and folks who have taken the plunge and can speak to some of the ins and outs of co-buying.

The full speaker list will be published in early January, but for now please save the date. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Thoughts from the Canadian Worker Co‑op Federation annual conference

November 14th, 2016 by Iler Campbell

The Canadian Worker Co‑op Federation (CWCF) held its annual conference last week in Vancouver ‑‑ a good choice since the drizzly November weather encouraged full participation of the 50+ participants.

I attended the conference on Friday morning, Alain Bridault kicked the morning off with a plenary session “Managing the Democratic Governance Process in a Worker Co‑op.” Bridault discussed the challenge of governing when your members are also your employees. Thanks to Denyse Guy from Co‑operatives and Mutuals Canada for her translation services and her input from time to time.

Getting it Done: How to Reduce Risk with your Construction Project
Whether you are completing building maintenance and upgrades or conducting larger-scale renovations, there are multiple risks associated with construction jobs. This session will explore ways for co-ops, condominium corporations, non-profit housing organizations, and others embarking on small or large-scale construction to mitigate risks, including: a. knowing the parties to the contract; b. properly reviewing your contract documents; and, for larger scale jobs, c. ensuring there is a bond in place from your general contractor.  We will also review  owners’ obligations under the Construction Lien Act, the provincial statute that outlines the rights and obligations of owners, landlords, contractors, and sub-contractors with respect to construction. There will be time set aside for questions.

This session is also a great opportunity for participants/attendees to get to know one another! We look forward to seeing you.
