Brian Iler joins the Ontario government’s Advisory Committee on the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010

June 16th, 2011 by Iler Campbell LLP

It’s been almost exactly a year since we last wrote about the Not‑for‑Profit Corporations Act, 2010. This time we’ve just a quick note to let you know that Brian has joined the Ontario government’s new Advisory Committee on the Not‑for‑Profit Corporations Act, 2010. He will be representing the Center for Social Innovation.

The committee will review and provide feedback on draft materials as they are developed by the Ministry of Consumer Services and ServiceOntario. The materials include plain language guides, default by-laws, an updated Not-for-Profit Incorporator’s Handbook, and regulations that will be released in the next year to support the new law. The goal is to make the Act accessible and easy to understand.

If you’re curious about our thoughts on the Act, take a look at our last blog post about it – we’re still hoping to get those three big “asks” addressed.

If you’re curiouser still, stay tuned for news of our Tools conference – a one day workshop for not‑for‑profits. We look forward to seeing you there! (Date TBD)

The members of the Advisory Committee are:

  • Ontario Bar Association (OBA)
  • Ontario Non-profit Network (ONN)
  • Centre for Social Innovation
  • Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO)
  • The Ontario Trillium Foundation
  • Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario
  • Certified Management Accountants of Ontario

  • Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI), Voluntary Sector Relations
  • Ministry of Consumer Services (MCS)
  • ServiceOntario of the Ministry of Government Services (MGS-SO)
  • Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for mid May 2011.  Stay tuned for further informal updates on the work of the committee.
