Our 50th article on rabble.ca!

We published our 50th monthly article on rabble.ca. It feels like just yesterday that we started this but we’ve been writing for rabble since April 2, 2012! This year we wrote about service animals, medical marijuana in stores and in homes, the fed’s treatment of non profits, the inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women, transgender rights in law and in sports, alternative healthcare, privacy, impartiality in the justice system, and racist sports logos.

A ground-breaking event

Options for Homes’ Danforth Village Estates officially broke ground on March 24 by digging trowels into a really adorable construction themed cake. This was the first of three groundbreaking ceremonies we were thrilled to attend this year in celebration of our client’s great work. The others: Artscape Weston broke ground on June 22 and Options’ Village by Main Station on Nov 23.

We told you the cake was adorable. Also very impressive. (Just like Options.)

Snazzy!

Celia debuted our new (and first) tradeshow booth at the CHASEO Spring Congress in Ottawa. Next scheduled sightings: look for us at the Golden Horseshoe CHF Winter Workshops in St. Catharines on January 30 and at the CHFC AGM in Niagara Falls June 7-10. We’re itching to use this thing so if you’ve got an event coming up let us know!

A great honour

Brian Iler was presented with the 2016 AMS/John Hodgson Award of Excellence in Charity and Not-For-Profit Law by the Ontario Bar Association Charity and Not-For-Profit Law Section. Celia Chandler introduced him with a brief recounting of his career and his personality. In her speech introducing him, she called out “his energy, his idealism, his ability to cut to the chase.”

Goodbye to a old friend

Angie Joyce retired from Iler Campbell. In a blog post, Brian wrote, “For forty years, there’s been one constant in my life as a lawyer - Angie Joyce has been by my side. That’s now changed.”

Go Team Bidi!

Celia’s team for the 2016 Toronto OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre raised an astonishing $17,363. Only one of the 8 member team succumbed to the temptation to lay down on the sidewalk during the 25 km walk. That was Bidi, Celia’s dog and the team’s mascot and namesake.

Introducing IC Education

IC Education is a series of intimate - and free! - legal education events. For our first event, Shelina and our IT manager, Fraser, tackled CASL compliance. Safia followed that with a workshop on construction projects on November 2. Our next event is titled Co-ownerships - your entrance to the real estate market? and will take place Jan 26th at the Centre for Social Innovation. Make sure you’re signed up to our email list to sign up for this and learn about future events.

Far out!

Celia landed in Vancouver on November 4 for the Canadian Worker Co-op Federation annual conference where she presented on legal issues in worker co-ops, making this the easy winner for Iler Campbell’s furthest flung speaking engagement of the year. Other events took us all across Ontario and to Montreal and saw our lawyers speak on a wide variety of topics.

That’s all folks!

We wish you all the best for the new year.
